Today, I'm beyond excited to reveal a game-changing update from the realms of Xyzzya, our labor of love and a solo-indie browser-based MMORPG. But first, let me take you on a little journey - the journey of creating Xyzzya's combat system.
The Struggle and the Breakthrough
For the longest time, I grappled with the question: How should combat feel in Xyzzya? I experimented with various mechanics, but nothing seemed to click. It was a period marked by intense writer's block, a challenging phase where each attempt felt like hitting a wall. Then, two profound realizations struck me.
Firstly, I acknowledged that my love for RPGs wasn't rooted in combat itself, but rather in the strategy and narrative weaving through the journey. Secondly, and more importantly, it dawned on me that I was sitting on a goldmine of potential with Xyzzya's backbone technologies: advanced procedural generation and powerful AI. Why not harness these to revolutionize the combat experience?
The Birth of a New Combat UI
These epiphanies led to the birth of a combat system that's deceptively simple yet infinitely complex. It's designed to cater to every player's unique approach, reflecting the diverse and evolving nature of our AI-powered universe.
Complete Control
In Xyzzya, combat unfolds in one to five rounds, with the longer duels reserved for the most formidable bosses. You'll be presented with three predictive options per round, each tailored by our AI based on your play style, current scenario, and opponent. But the real magic lies in the freedom to type in your custom commands. Whatever choise you decide to make, the game's sophisticated engine will interpret your command and respond appropriately, blending your stats and a sprinkle of RNG (that’s Random Number Generation) to decide the outcome.
Simplicity Meets Infinite Possibilities
This approach to combat mirrors the essence of Xyzzya: a simple interface laid over a complex, ever-changing universe. It's a testament to how advanced technology can create an experience that's both easy to grasp and rich in depth. Similar to the Conversation modal, your commands are displayed in a blue colored bubble, and those of the opponent are light brown. Information messages, such as the narration of the fight are shown in white. Overall, I am satisfied with the combat screen, particularly the simplicity of the design and layout.
